Amsterdam, Netherlands - Budget Travel Guide

I visited Amsterdam last Autumn, and I honestly cannot wait to go back. This trip was actually as birthday present; however, I have created this budget guide (for my own future reference to be honest) and wanted to share it with you!

Getting There

First of all, I would say that 3-4 nights is ideal for exploring Amsterdam and flying is the easiest way to get there from the UK, and it’s also not too expensive… You can get a return flight from Edinburgh in November 2023 for under £80 with EasyJet:

Accommodation

Amsterdam is a tourist hotspot, so it’s certainly not short of accommodation options. Here is a highly rated central hostel:

And here are some affordable hotels for 2:

Things to Do

Amsterdam is an amazingly unique city, with so much to do and see. You will honestly have a great time without doing any excursions and by just admiring the city - there are some free museums too! However, our favourite excursions from our budget-friendly itinerary were:

- Lovers Canal Cruise:

This lasts around an hour and gives you a tour of the city via their famous canals (a must do in Amsterdam and only €7 on Groupon!!!)

- Anne Frank House

Such an informative experience and would highly recommend to see (tickets €16)

- Madame Tussauds

A fun-packed museum which takes up the best part of a day (tickets are €23 online) https://www.madametussauds.com/amsterdam/en/tickets-prices/

Overall

All in, you are looking at between £400-500 for your budget trip to Amsterdam (with excursions and cheap food included). Of course, prices will vary depending on how you are travelling (solo or with others). If you haven't already, check out my “10 Thrifty Travel Tips” blog for some money-saving travel tips.

  3. Is it worth hiring a bike to get around?

    1. That's a really good question actually! We hired bikes when we went and it was so much fun - bikes are definitely the mode of transport in Amsterdam so it's worth renting a bike when you're there as a fun way to explore the city. All of the main attractions are around the city centre and there are lots of bike lanes etc, so it's really easy to get around. I noticed quite a few shops where you can rent bikes and there are different lengths (an hour, a couple of hours, or the full day - I'm sure there is a multiple day option too) and they're pretty cheap. I think we paid about 10 euros per bike for 3 hours!
